Anyone have any summer reading recommendations?
For the first time since college, I'm actually reading consistently. Highlights of the books I've gone through in the past couple months:
- Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri (HIGHLY recommended, esp. Interpreter of Maladies)
- Freakanomics - Pleasantly surprised a lot of people actually like this, as did I.
- Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince -- Liked it. . . but not sure what to make of it overall (Too derivative? Anyone?)
- Septimus Heap -- A Potter knockoff. . . OK for reading on an airplane
Seriously, I had to ramp myself up into actual books with words and stuff, but am very happy to be reading again. I had to 'revert' a little by mowing through a bunch of comic books, then upgrading myself to 'books that read like TV' (IE books based on TV shows, pulp fantasy novels from the 2oth century, etc.). . . and then relying on Mr. Jennings for some high quality fiction that I would actually like (IE: Interpreter of Maladies) . . . so hurrah for book readin'.

the kite runner by khaled hosseini.
also, my secret history by paul theroux. good beach reading. (old book from the 90s i think). i read that on vacation last week.
i just started underworld by don delillo. dunno if i like it yet.
Memoir type stuff: Both Kick Me and Superstud by Paul Feig are hilarious. Anything by Sarah Vowell, especially Take the Cannoli. David Sedaris too.
Non-fiction: I dug Blink by Malcolm Gladwell a lot. Haven't gotten to Freakanomics yet, but it's in the pile.
I loved Underworld, but it took me a looong time to get through it.
Graphic novel: I'm currently digging La Perdida by Jessica Abel.
Happy reading hombre.
